Vehicle Safety News

August 2, 2008
The Salt Lake Tribune, "Two die on I-15 in Mitsubishi SUV rollover near Provo"
An SUV carrying seven people traveling to a soccer tournament in Salt Lake City rolled on Interstate 15 near Provo Saturday, killing a woman and a teenager. Teresa Valencia, 36, and Kevin Santos, 15, died in the one-vehicle crash that closed left two lanes of traffic in each direction on I-15 for about three hours Saturday, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ted Tingey. Tingey said a Mitsubishi SUV carrying Valencia, her husband, four 15-year-old boys and a 13-year-old boy lost control for an unknown reason. The SUV ran off the road on the right side, and when Valencia pulled it back to the road she over-corrected and the vehicle rolled.

One of the male passengers was ejected, and the car continued to roll into the concrete median in the center of the road. It vaulted over the median into the southbound lanes and two more male passengers were ejected. The vehicle came to rest upside down in the left-hand southbound lane, Tingey said. Santos was ejected in the southbound lane and died at the scene. The 13-year-old boy was ejected in the northbound lane and taken by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition. His condition had been upgraded to serious late Saturday, Tingey said.

The second male ejected in the southbound lane was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in serious condition. The other three males in the car were also taken to Utah Valley with minor injuries. Valencia was driving her 15-year-old son, 13-year-old son and three of their friends to play in a four-on-four soccer tournament when the accident happened. Drugs, alcohol and excessive speed were not thought to be factors in the crash, Tingey said.
