Vehicle Safety News

August 24, 2007
The Lexington Herald Leader (KY), "Nicholasville mourns deaths of 3 children in Kia Sedona fire"
After the thunderous crash of a van on Watts Mill Road shook their house, Chuck and Lisa Evans heard whimpering and crying. They found a young girl outside the van and a boy lying on the ground. Chuck Evans beat back a fire in the Kia Sedona with a home fire extinguisher, but the fire raged up and "swept through the van like a tornado," he said recalling the horrific scene Tuesday night south of Nicholasville that left three children dead.

Loud pops "like fireworks or bullets" came from the van, Lisa Evans said. Chuck Evans helped a woman out of the passenger's front seat. The driver, another woman, also eventually got out. Then, the girl said there were two others in the back seat. "I thought there were only four of them," Chuck Evans said. "If I knew, I would've done something. I wish I could've done more." Killed were Emily Ann Preston, 10, Caleb Hildenbrandt, 11, and Nicholas Helton, 12. They were returning from a trip a local swimming spot.
