The Wall Street Journal, "Bridgestone Unit Widens Tire-Recall Efforts"

Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire LLC said it is taking additional steps, including sending letters to current owners of certain Ford Explorers, to make sure tires recalled in 2000 and 2001 have been taken off the road.

Last month, a safety research group asked federal highway-safety officials to study the effectiveness of those earlier recalls, noting that some tires weren't replaced and continued to be linked to rollover crashes. Safety Research & Strategies Inc. cited four cases in which spare tires not captured during the recalls were put into service and later failed, allegedly causing crashes. The result was one death and three crippling injuries.
