Tennessean.com, "Judge slashes damages against carmaker"

A Davidson County judge has drastically reduced the punitive damages against DaimlerChrysler in connection with an infant's death after a June 2001 minivan accident. Judge Hamilton Gayden yesterday cut from $98 million to $20 million the damages related to what a trial jury found to be faulty seat design on a 1998 Dodge Caravan that it said contributed to the death of 8-month-old Joshua Flax.

The infant died of head injuries after a crash on June 30, 2001, after a driver in a pick-up truck rear-ended the boy's grandparents' minivan. The infant's parents, Rachel Sparkman and Jeremy Flax, and grandparents, Jim and Sandra Sparkman, sued. They accused DaimlerChrysler of knowing that the seats in its vans were prone to collapse during rear-impact accidents.
