Firestone Tire Failures and Ford Explorer SUV Rollover Accidents

To date, more than 200 deaths and 700 injuries in the United States are the result of Ford Explorers rolling over after the tread separated on Firestone tires with which the Explorers had been equipped. Many defective tires included in recent tire tread recalls came as standard equipment on SUV vehicles. For example, Firestone’s Wilderness AT tires were standard with Ford Explorers in 2000.

Since Ford Explorer SUVs have a much higher center of gravity and are more prone to rollover than many other types of vehicles, tire failure can become an especially dangerous situation. In many cases involving Bridgestone/Firestone's tire failure and Ford Explorer SUVs, this has led to devastating rollover accidents.

Despite the knowledge of this increased rollover risk and the danger of tire failure, Ford produced many Sport Utility Vehicles with the defective tires and neglected to ensure high safety standards in the result of a rollover accident. As a result, both the tire and auto manufacturers may be held liable for injuries suffered as a result of tire tread defects.
