Cooper Tire Recall

The Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has issued several safety recalls in the recent past, including certain Cooper tires manufactured between January 28 and February 3, 2001 and between April 4 and May 15, 2004.

The recalled tires lack adequate rubber coverage of the belt edge or belt overlap, which can lead to tire tread separation and result in a serious vehicle crash.

2006 UPDATE: NHTSA Investigations of Cooper Tire

On July 13, 2006, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration ("NHTSA") began an official investigation into reports of tire tread defects in Dominator Sport A/T, a line of tires produced by the Cooper Tire & Rubber Company.

The investigation involves over 100,000 tires manufactured between 2003 and 2005 and is based upon failure rates supplied by the tire manufacturer. In addition, according to federal complaint logs, 115 complaints have been made against two to three dozen Cooper Tire lines such as Futura, Trendsetter, and Discoverer.

Media reports have stated that in lawsuits across the nation filed against Cooper Tire between 2000 and 2005, it has been alleged that more than 200 deaths and about 250 serious injuries have occurred due to defective tires.
