Video clip: $54 Million Verdict Against Chrysler

VIDEO

Lieff Cabraser attorneys Robert J. Nelson and Scott Nealey discuss a wrongful death lawsuit based on a transmission defect in millions of Chrysler vehicles.

Toyota Rollover Accidents and Roof Crush Injuries

On September 1, 2009, the Los Angeles Times reported that Toyota spent years concealing evidence from victims of hundreds of rollover accidents that resulted in death and injury, Dimitrios P. Biller, a former top lawyer for the automaker, alleges in a lawsuit against Toyota.

Biller accuses the world's largest automaker of destroying data in more than 300 accidents that proved vehicle roofs were substandard. Also in the lawsuit, he alleges the company illegally withheld e-mails and other computer-stored information from victims' attorneys.

Importance of Roof Strength: Prevents Deaths and Injuries in Rollover Accidents

When vehicles roll over, their roofs hit the ground, deform and can crush. Stronger roofs crush less, reducing the risk that occupants will be killed or severely injured by a collapsing roof. Stronger roofs also can prevent occupants from being ejected through windows, windshields, or doors that have broken or opened because the roof has deformed. Roofs that don't collapse help keep people inside vehicles as they roll.

Any vehicle can roll in a crash, but the problem is worse in some SUVs and pickups than others. About 25 percent of occupant deaths in crashes of cars and minivans involve rolling over. For SUVs, this proportion jumps to 59 percent.
