Mitsubishi Car & SUV Roof Crush Danger: Weak Roofs Lead to Deaths in Rollover Accidents
In an auto accident, a strong vehicle roof can be a life-saving feature. Rollover accidents are especially dangerous because the force of a vehicle's weight resting on its roof can cause weak roofs to collapse, resulting in massive head, spine and back injuries, or even death.
In a study performed by The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, researchers found a direct correlation between deaths and weak roof strengths. IIHS concluded that many of the deaths could have been prevented if the roofs had been built stronger on the vehicles.
In lawsuits, plaintiffs have alleged that certain Mitsubishi vehicles, including the Montero SUV, have weak roofs and supporting pillar columns that can withstand a force of only 1.5 times its weight, that is the minimum roof strength capacity set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 1971. At a cost of only $50-$150 per vehicle, experts have found the addition of structural foam or high strength steel increase the car roof strength to a crush ratio of 3.5 or higher.
