Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Tank Fires

On October 2, 2009, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) filed a petition with federal safety regulators calling for the recall of all Jeep Grand Cherokees manufactured from 1993 through 2004. "The design is so bad that Chrysler frequently settles lawsuits without extensive discovery and subject to confidentiality agreements," the Petition notes.

Alleged Design Flaws Create Risk Of Fuel Tank Explosions and Fires

On Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs, the fuel tank is located behind the rear axle. Unlike the earlier Jeep Cherokee, however, the fuel tank of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is plastic, and extends below the rear bumper. In lawsuits filed against Chrysler, it has been alleged that the design of the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee has resulted in numerous fatalities and serious burn injuries.

The lawsuits charge that there is nothing to protect the plastic tank from rupturing in a rollover accident or crash when struck from the rear by a vehicle braking or with a low front profile. It has further been alleged that the fuel system in the 1993-2004 Grand Cherokee is defective because it degrades over time and, on standard SUVs, is unshielded to protect from sharp objects such as suspension bolts that can puncture the tank in the event of an accident.

Vehicle Fire Lawsuits

Injured drivers and passengers, and the families of loved ones who have died in crashes and fires involving Jeep vehicles, may continue to bring claims for the manufacture of trucks with an unreasonable risk of catching fire in an accident or collision.

Damages sought have included:

  • Wrongful death;
  • Past and future physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and physical impairment;
  • Past and future medical, incidental and hospital expenses;
  • Past and future loss of earnings and earning capacity; and
  • Punitive damages.
